In the heart of the Mediterranean lies the vibrant island of Cyprus, where the echoes of Serbian basketball prowess resonate through the courts of Nicosia and Limassol in the Winter Basketball League. Thanks to the forward-thinking initiative by the association Moufflons with the project “Unity Through Sports” and co-financing by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Directorate for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, amateur basketball has become a unifying force, bringing together Serbian expatriates and diaspora communities in Cyprus.
Women’s Team
Defending Champions
In its second season, the women’s amateur basketball team stands tall as defending champions, a testament to their dedication and skill. Hailing from Nicosia, the team exudes a spirit of resilience and unity, reflecting the rich heritage of Serbian basketball. Their inaugural season victory was not merely a triumph on the court but a celebration of diverse communities brought together through sports as well as the identity and camaraderie in the diaspora community.
The team combines talent from various backgrounds. In the previous season, the team was spearheaded by Milena Zaric. However, this year, it comprises predominantly Cypriot female players, with a few individuals boasting Serbian heritage. Nemanja Bjedov serves as the association president and as a mentor, providing guidance and support to the squad. Their journey is more than just about winning games; it’s about fostering connections, empowering women in sports, and preserving the cultural legacy that binds them together.

A Strong Presence in Limassol
Meanwhile, in the bustling city of Limassol, the men’s amateur basketball team stands as a formidable force in the local league. They proudly represent the Serbian diaspora, bringing a blend of skill, strategy, and sheer determination to the courts. While their focus is on the game, their presence extends beyond sports, serving as ambassadors of our basketball culture and tradition.
Under the guidance of volunteer Nikola Popović, the men’s team epitomizes the essence of sportsmanship and resilience. With most of the players hailing from Serbia, but also a few from Russia, Cyprus, Greece, and beyond, they embody the spirit of unity and excellence that defines Slavic basketball.

Moreover, these amateur basketball teams serve as a beacon of hope and unity, reminding everyone that regardless of where they may be, their shared love for the game and their diverse backgrounds only strengthen the bonds they share.
